My name is Marshall Thompson and I finished a
500-mile walk for peace through Utah, the reddest
state in the nation. I was always opposed to the
war, but after I served a one-year tour of duty
with the Army in Iraq, I felt even more responsible
for the problem. On Oct. 2, 2006 I started to walk
through my home state from the Idaho border to
the Arizona border. I walked 27 days, one day for
every 100 U.S. troops who have died in Iraq. Unfortunately,
the number exceeded 2,800 in October (Now, the
number is up to nearly 4,000 soldiers). I’ve
decided now that I’ll spend the 28th day
in Washington D.C. meeting with the Utah delegates
to discuss troop withdrawal. I don’t know
how much good it will do. I don’t even know
if they’ll see me, but I have to do something.
