DAY 17
October 20, 2006

It’s hard to think that on Monday it was snowing. Today was perfect walking weather. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, but the high altitude kept the temperature down.

Doug and I opted for a bike trail to go through Sevier Canyon. The paved path that we walked on for almost 6 miles used to be the old rail bed. The leaves are just starting to change here and it was nice to get a second look at fall.

We stopped at the Big Rock Candy Mountain for lunch. I always thought the mountain, which is covered in yellow, red and white sand, was named after the song. However, Adam looked it up online and said that Burl Ives wrote the song about this particular Utah geological phenomenon. If the Internet said it, it must be true.

In the evening we bumped into Tom Grover, the host of KVNU’s For the People. He was going camping with his in-laws and they stopped to say hello. Tom’s father-in-law gave us some homegrown apples that kept us going until the end of the day.
